I read the book before watching the movie. I feel like the main thing they did wrong was casting. Bhaer didn't seem like he should, physically, age wise and even his general attitude and they had the same person play Amy at 12 and 20, which didn't work at all. Given the historical context of the time and how she speaks in the book, it's clear that Hannah is a black woman, but I guess the director was afraid someone somewhere would get offended if they stayed true to the character. The ending didn't do Bhaer and Jo justice as she realized she loved him, he came from NY to find her, and even though he needed to leave temporarily to California for economic reasons, he wanted them to be together. Jo waits for him, it's not the trope of running after the love interest before they get on the plane/bus/ etc. and leave forever. The context of her wanting to open a school for boys (not boys and girls) is because of Bhaer's nephews, also partially because of Laurie - if I'm remembering right. The director was also too scared to keep the context of the time in the book about race. As previously stated they made Hannah white, and at the school, and throughout the public scenes, they added way more black people than actually made an appearance in the book. The beach was a private party with only a handful of people, they made it take place at what seemed to be a public beach instead with random people around. Beth's arc was trash in this because just like with everything else, they rushed it. I'd say if you wanted to do actual justice to Little Women as faithfully as possible, you'd need to do a mini series. Give time to flesh out the different characters, cast actors who actually look like the described characters, and let things flow as they're supposed to instead of jumping all over the place.
